A woman's story · The Hem of His Garment

This study has helped me face evil

I grew up in a very rough family, with an abusive father and an abused mother. While I was in foster care, a godly teacher taught my first scriptures (in public school). She gave me guidance and helped me stay very focused throughout school so that when I went to college I could become a teacher.

I did not become a Christian until after I had a broken neck and saw what God did for my mother through my accident. My life had not been perfect, and I made many bad choices, especially after I married at age 18. However, God used those mistakes and my experiences to draw me to Him.

After my first husband died at 25 years, I married again, only later to realize he had spent decades planning my demise. Before I was able to escape, he caused brain injuries, as well as injuries to my shoulders, knees, and lower back. The mind games he played in order to terrorize me were almost as significant as the physical injuries. He absconded with all of the life insurance money from my late husband, as well as our retirement savings. In reality, he broke me physically, emotionally, and financially. However, he did not break my trust in God.

For the past 25 years, I have dealt with the pain caused by my ex-husband. I have experienced night terrors and moments of absolute fear. Although I took the steps to forgive him, I never felt released from his evil.

This study has helped me face that evil and recognize it as powerless over me because I have been healed by the blood of Jesus Christ. Compared to the suffering of Jesus, I recognized that mine was far less than his. My precious savior walked through my experiences with me, never leaving me. How powerful that truth is. My hope is in Jesus Christ. He understands everything I’ve gone through because he has gone through worse. He is the one who set me free and walks with me today.
