Dear Friend,

One day I was looking through a Christian Catalog and I saw a T-shirt with the inscription "I'm the wretch the song refers to." We all know the song "Amazing Grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me..." I don't know about you but I love the song Amazing Grace (and the slogan) because it reminds me where I have come. It does us all good from time to time to remember from where we have come. It keeps us humble and makes us sensitive to those around us who may not be in the same place we are in our walk with the Lord.

Oftentimes I've been in Christian gatherings and heard conversations that made my heart hurt. My heart hurts for those who are wounded, because the conversation is like a dagger in their hearts. I've heard someone say "What kind of woman would kill her baby? or "What kind of a woman would have an abortion?" I've heard derogatory remarks about prostitutes, drug addicts, and prisoners. It's not wrong to address those issues, but we need to remember that the way we speak in a public setting can give life or wound. I've counseled women who were wounded by such comments and they stopped going to church. What about the ex-prostitute who may be newly saved and is trying to put her life back on the right track? The drug addict who is struggling in his walk would never admit it and seek help after hearing those kinds of comments. The comments may be heard by an ex-convict who received the Lord while in prison, has served his time and is now seeking a church home where he will be loved and nurtured. We need to keep in mind that the church was meant to be a hospital where God can send the wounded and know that they will be loved and cared for. Sometimes we forget that we are "the wretch" that the song Amazing Grace refers to.

In the book of James he talks about the tongue being a fire. "Behold the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder, wherever the inclination of the pilot desires. So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. Behold how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell. But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father; and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way." (James 3:4-6, 8-10)

Every day in Healing Hearts we minister to people who are broken and desperately need Jesus to put their lives back together. We do everything possible to refer them to good Bible-believing churches where they can be further discipled, loved and cared for. Next time you are with brothers and sisters in Christ and these subjects come up, help us by listening and encouraging them to always let their words be salted with love, grace, and mercy. James 1:19b says, "But let everyone be quick to hear, slow to speak" and in verse 26 "If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless." Sometimes we need to be reminded to be sensitive to the needs of others around us and not be so quick to speak. Become an instrument of healing by taking the first step to reach out to that new person that may be walking through the doors of your church and by making them feel welcome. Your love, encouragement and efforts could be the very thing that God uses to continue the healing process.

God has called you and I to be instruments of His love, mercy and grace. We truly appreciate your prayers and the sacrifices that you make to give financially to Healing Hearts Ministries. Please consider becoming a monthly supporter. Your gift can change a life for eternity.

It is truly an honor to partner with you in God's work. May the Lord bless and keep you always.

In Jesus Love,

International Director
