Dear Friend,

When I first became a Christian, I assumed that all Christians were pro-life. I thought that anyone who professed to know the Lord would stand for the lives of innocent children, but I was wrong. I couldn't understand how this could be. Having had an abortion myself, I knew first-hand how devastating abortion was. It practically destroyed my life and my baby's father's life, not to mention that it took the life of the only child I would ever conceive. Could it be that many Christians are just not educated? Could it be that many are dealing with their own private sins and pain? Whatever the answer, Christians need to stand and speak the truth in love regardless of the cost. We need to make sure that our own people know the truth, because it is the only thing that can set us free.

On January 23, 1973 the United States Supreme Court legalized abortion on demand. Since that decision, there have been well over 1.5 million abortions performed each year in the United States according to the statistics that have been gathered from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) out of Atlanta, Georgia. According to these statistics, over 54 million children have lost their lives in the U. S. alone. We need to keep in mind that not all states are required to report to the CDC, so if we had 100% reporting, the numbers would be much higher. According to US News and World Report, approximately 43% of American women have had at least one abortion.

Do you find these statistics shocking? Are you willing to share this truth with others and stand for life?

As we were leaving our International Conference in Colorado Springs, Colorado this past October, my office manager, Kim DeWitz, had a conversation with a doctor who sat beside her on the airplane. He and his wife were actively involved in their church. To show you how uneducated the church is today, I would like to share this conversation with you.

Kim: I was on my way to the airport and I remember talking to God and asking why I hadn't had opportunities to share Healing Hearts on my flights to conference. or maybe I had not taken the opportunity. Each year as I attend conference, I hear at least one story from our leaders about an opportunity they had to share Healing Hearts Ministries with someone on their flight.

I had forgotten all about my conversation with God when I was sitting on the plane as it was being de-iced on my return flight from conference. The de-icing took over a half hour and I soon realized that I was going to miss my connecting flight.

The gentleman sitting next to me began small talk about the weather and the plane de-icing. He talked about other flight delays he'd had flying out of Colorado Springs. He shared that he was a doctor and he lived in California. He'd been in Colorado Springs at the Naval Academy. He asked what I was doing in Colorado Springs, so I told him I was there for a ministry conference. Then the conversation went very closely like this..

Doctor: Maybe my wife has heard of your ministry, she is very active in our church, what does your ministry do?
Kim: We are a post abortion counseling ministry. We counsel women and men who've experienced abortion.
Doctor: Oh, she may have heard of your ministry.
Kim: Yes, she may have, we have many leaders throughout the United States as well as outside the United States. (He was quiet for a couple seconds.)
Doctor: Can there really be a need for this type of ministry? There aren't that many people who've have had an abortion.
Kim: There's a need, the statistics in the US tell us that 1 out of 3 women have had at least one abortion. There is a definite need for our ministry. (He thought for a moment.)
Doctor: Your statistics are wrong, they are exaggerated. Where did you get your statistics?
Kim: I'm not exactly sure where the numbers came from. But, I am certain they are accurate because these statistics are in all of our literature.
Doctor: There could not be that many.
Kim: (There was a silence, then.) You should ask your wife if she has heard of Healing Hearts Ministries.
Doctor: She would not know anyone who has had an abortion.
Kim: If you think about the fact that 1 out of 3 women are post-abortive, and then think about how many men and women are in your church, you probably do know someone. (Again, there was a short silence)
Doctor: I believe women and men should have the right to choose.
Kim: I've found that many times when the focus turns to whether or not abortion should be allowed, it becomes very political. Men and women who've experienced abortion many times are forgotten in the political realm. They are left in bondage and silence with this horrible secret. They are bound with guilt and shame and many will choose alcohol, drugs and other ways to try to cover the pain.
Doctor: But most of the women having abortions cannot afford to have children and care for them.
Kim: Women who have abortions come from a wide variety of backgrounds, young and old, wealthy and poor, high school students and college educated women, all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
Doctor: You must have heard about the doctor who performed abortions and was killed in Kansas.
Kim: Yes, I have, and no one should be murdered like that.
Doctor: I agree.
Kim: We actually work with a pregnancy center that is located next to that abortion clinic. The pregnancy center has our literature and we are a referral source for them. Those who work at this pregnancy center have seen women going in and out of this clinic. This pregnancy center has seen many women who have had abortions who then come to their pregnancy center for help when they are broken and hurting.
(The plane landed, and he was getting his carry-on luggage.)
Kim: Well, I hope you will ask your wife if she has heard of our ministry.
Doctor: No, I don't think so, she is much too busy with work and church.
End of conversation.

Here we have an excellent example. This man was a doctor, actively involved in his church and yet, from the sound of his conversation with Kim, did not know the truth about abortion and its impact on our nation and its people. Or, perhaps he had been affected by abortion and didn't want to face the truth.

How many people are sitting in your church like this man? Are you willing to share the truth in love? I pray so. May the Lord give you strength and courage to speak the truth in love!

Please listen to a moving and inspiring segment from a sermon of John Piper's, which addresses President Obama's comments on protecting the reproductive rights of women on the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade last January. It gets right to the heart of the matter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOtT3Cho4a8
