Dear Friend,

For many years now, we have been writing and developing materials designed to disciple youth and young adults in the Gospel. Our two youth Bible studies--“First Love” for young women and “The Fight of Your Life” for young men—have been well-received and used in both group and individual settings. I wish I had space in this letter to share with you all of the testimonies we have received from parents, youth workers, and pastors who have experienced the fruit of these materials. Instead, I want to share with you about a new opportunity God has given our ministry to impact at-risk youth within inner cities.

Several years ago, a Detroit area teacher contacted our ministry because she wanted to disciple at-risk teens in the inner city where she lives. She previewed our materials and loved them. Because she could not afford to purchase them, we gifted those materials to her. It was incredible to hear the stories of what God accomplished through this teacher--not only the impact on the youth she was reaching directly, but also on their parents by extension. This teacher ultimately experienced warfare beyond what we could have imagined, and her program was eventually was shut down because of the COVID virus and school closings. Even though her efforts were short-lived, we saw God do amazing things.

The Lord started tugging on my heart about these precious at-risk teens and all the hardships they face living in the inner city. I was inspired by this teacher’s efforts, and soon God gave me a burden to seek other opportunities to partner with inner city ministries and supply them with our youth discipleship studies free of charge.

In December, one of our faithful donors contacted me to ask if I had any special projects that needed to be funded. I didn’t hesitate to share with her my burden for the inner city. That donor ultimately funded my proposal, and in January 2021 we were off and running with our “Inner City Teens at Risk” project.

Today, we are working to develop a separate “youth” website to better facilitate this project. Individuals and churches looking for teen materials will be able to more easily discover and navigate through our available youth resources. In addition, this project will provide options for inner city ministries to affiliate with us and qualify to receive access to our materials free of charge. Please pray for the successful completion of this new website!

We currently have two ministries working with us:
  • Pastor Chris Nelson from Riverside Assemblies of God in Jersey City, NJ
  • Michelle Thompson from Reborn Ministries Chicago, IL
New ministries just getting started:
  • Rev. Richard Sykes, Prevailing Church in Inkster, MI
Potential partners reviewing our materials:
  • Robert Garner President, Youth Horizons, Wichita KS
  • Pastor Don Lewis, Cross Points Church, Kansas City, MO
  • Heather Faulkner, Young Live Area Director, Green Bay, WI
As we’ve worked with these ministries, we’ve learned that 93% of their youth can’t read. Yes, as shocking as it is, the school system has failed these children. No child in America should be left behind like that. In response, we are making efforts to adapt our youth studies into smaller units so that these inner city ministries can better serve their literacy-challenged youth.

Ways you can be involved with the “Inner City Teens at Risk” program:
  • PRAY! Ask the Lord to connect us with the inner city churches and ministries that could use our materials. Our staff is working hard to build the right tools to facilitate the new program. Pray that the Lord would bless their efforts to develop the necessary website and programming. And, mostly, pray that the Gospel would reach the at-risk youth who desperately need to hear a message of hope.
  • DONATE! You can help sponsor this program’s development and/or provide funds for scholarship materials to our affiliated inner city ministries by giving a one-time gift or becoming a monthly donor of our “Youth Ministries” fund. Visit healinghearts.org/donate
  • SHARE! If you know of an inner city church or ministry that might benefit from our program, please let us know by emailing us at youthministries@healinghearts.org.

Thank you for praying, giving, and serving with us to advance the Gospel in your churches, communities, and throughout the world, one heart at a time.
God Bless You,

Sue Liljenberg
President/Intl. Director
