What an amazing gift we were given the day Christ was born. While December may be known as "the season of giving", I am blessed to see the spirit of Christmas all year round. What a daily joy it is to receive the gifts of your time, prayers, and financial support at Healing Hearts on behalf of the many hurting women, men, and families to whom we minister. Every gift is such a beautiful reflection of the love our Savior has shown us. His was a gift of sacrifice to redeem the broken and outcast... and so are yours. "We love because He first loved us..." - 1 John 4:19 This kind of precious, gospel-motivated giving is seen no more clearly than in a recent donation letter we received from an inmate ministered to by Healing Hearts leaders Sue Sanford and Maria Rose. (We shared about Sue and Maria's prison outreach in last month's newsletter). This letter brought tears to our eyes... My name is Shawn, I am a 47 yr old woman at the Washington correctional center for women. I came here at the age of 22, back in 1990. While I was out on bail awaiting trial I got pregnant. My husband + I were in the process of divorcing + we had a 2yr old daughter. Looking at the prospect of life in prison I allowed him to pressure, bully + threaten me into an abortion, in November 1989. I thought I had put that all behind me, after all it's been 26yrs. I saw a flyer for healing hearts bible study, my roommate had done it the year prior + told me it would be good for me. I was a fairly new christian (2013) + she said the leaders were great. So, I signed-up. I can not sing praises loud enough for my groups leaders, Sue + Maria. They were so open + warm - the ideal picture of how Christians should be. By week 2 it was put upon my heart to be baptized. I spoke w/ them about it + they made it happen. They arranged it with a Pastor friend, + on the day before our last class they made the extra drive down to attend church w/us + assist w/the baptisms. Maria even brought her husband as a guest. It was amazing. The following day was our last class + it was bittersweet knowing we wouldn't be able to see each other again. I just want you to know what an amazing job these 2 ladies are doing for the women here. It was also put upon my heart to also start to tithe. Enclosed you'll find a check for $4.03. It's not much but I only made $40.32. Someday it will be much more. OH, GIVE THANKS WITH US! for joyful givers, like Shawn, who give so that others may know the freedom she has found; for the work God did to set her and so many others free; for God's faithful provision over 2015 to supply for Healing Hearts' needs; and, most of all, for the gift of His Son, Jesus! Many of you share the same story as Shawn - you were lost, outcast, hurting. Perhaps it involved an abortion, emotional or physical abuse, a catastrophic loss. But when someone came alongside and helped you shine the full light of the Gospel onto your hurt and shame, you were set free! Maybe this is what motivates you to give of your time, your prayers, your finances to help bring the light of God's love to those still trapped in the darkness of their pasts. As the year comes to a close, I humbly ask if you would consider giving a year-end gift to Healing Hearts. It's no secret that 2015 has been one of our tightest budget years to-date. Yet we remain confident in the One who has always provided for every need. Whether it's a monthly commitment to $4.03, or a one-time gift, on behalf of every person we minister to thank you for your sacrificial giving.
